My last reading response was about the future of digital art but I am also curious about the past of digital art as well. I know that when computers came into the scene, before digital art was even digital art, the same conversation that we’re having about AI destroying art was the same conversation that people had about computers/technology destroying art.
The author of the article discusses that when computers came out, what people would use to create tangible art like paintings, drawings, etc, were just transformed into digital mode. If you think about it, there are apps that are dedicated to drawing. They give you blank canvas, different brush types, palettes, etc.
Some of the first forms of digital art were live-action movies or films. The animation on top of the already recorded video was one of the first steps into the digital art world that is so popular today. One of the next forms was editing photography. While the camera is not necessarily new, it was years later when people started to edit the pictures they took. Soon after was when the computer drawings and computer animations started coming to life. With the help of technology and how technology has improved, digital art has been able to improve as well. The first computer editing software was SuperPaint in 1973 with many more following right after. Although the software was released just over 50 years ago, which isn’t too long, the technology advancements have been huge helping shape the digital art world.
